Ramadan is the time of the year when Muslims try to connect with Allah (SWT). It is the best time for spiritual cleansing as well. They indulge in different activities to strengthen their bond with Allah (SWT).  During this month, Muslims avoid eating or drinking during all daylight hours. The Quran explains the purpose and advantages of fasting for believers. It describes the purpose of fasting and its helpful results.  In this blog, we will explore the Ramadan verses in the Quran and understand their meanings.

Islamic Teachings on Fasting

Islam has explained the actual meaning of fasting to us. Fasting involves more than refraining from food. Gentle actions to make up fast. It acts as a shield from sins. During fasting, we should be more kind and gentle towards others.  Fasting helps us improve our self-control capabilities. It assists us in overcoming negative behaviors. In Ramadan, we should spend our day in worship only.  Additionally, our religion emphasizes helping others during this blessed month. The best way of doing this is to do charity. Charity brings immense rewards and purifies our wealth. “Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan, it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.” (Surah Al-Hadid 57:18)

Fasting in the Quran

Through the Quran, Allah reveals facts about fasting.  In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183), Allah says: O you who believe! Allah commands you to fast as He did for past generations to achieve spiritual purity. All believers need to practice fasting according to this ayah. The religious practice of fasting existed long before Islam emerged. Allah wants us to become closer to Him through fasting. Through fasting, we develop better self-discipline and patience while growing thankful for what we have.  Through fasting, we learn to control our desires. Our spirit knows firsthand what poverty and hunger mean. Fasting also develops our sense of gratitude and genuine humility. As per Surah Al-Baqarah verse 2:185, Allah (SWT) revealed the following statement. The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance. According to this verse, the Quran came down to earth during Ramadan, which has high spiritual value. The Holy Quran serves as direction for all human beings on Earth and shows people the proper conduct.

Quranic Guidance on Ramadan

Allah provides specific instructions about fasting.  In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:187), He says: Follow the Ramadan rules by eating and drinking before morning light shows brightly compared to darkness. Follow the fast until the darkness of night arrives. Islam permits us to eat before daylight begins. We stop eating before dawn which is called Suhoor. We fast until sunset. At sundown, our fasting ends, and we return to eating. Muslims fast according to these religious rules.  During our fasting period, we need to avoid immoral acts and remain calm and peaceful. We should dedicate ourselves to praying and performing righteous actions. Allah clearly states that fasting should not be difficult to accomplish. Anyone who becomes ill or travels can skip fasting. We have the option to observe any missed fasts at a later time. A person who cannot fast due to age or illness can earn the same benefits by providing food to poor people. Allah’s actions prove he shows mercy and kindness.

Quran Verses About Patience

Being patient is necessary during Ramadan’s observation. Fasting makes us strong, and the practice of fasting improves our ability to deal with anger.  Allah tells us in the Quran: “O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153) When we fast daily, we develop valuable patience skills. We do not complain. We do not get angry. Fasting helps us learn to appreciate our available resources. Our patience benefits us in everything we do. In Surah Az-Zumar (39:10), Allah reveals: Patience brings a complete reward from Allah without having to count it. Allah promises valuable rewards to people who show patience. Fasting teaches us patience, and Allah generously rewards us for it. The reward system here is massive in value. People who fast sincerely from Allah will receive many blessings.

Importance of Fasting in Islam

In Islam, fasting is one of the main pillars of faith. It brings us closer to Allah, and our fasting habit helps us show appreciation for our available food. Many people around us face food scarcity. When we fast, we understand the pain of people who have nothing to eat. Fasting teaches us gratitude and develops a sense of care towards others. Fasting enables us to purify our hearts, gives us a new start, and makes us better Muslims. Regular fasting brings multiple health benefits to our bodies. Regular fasting also makes us more disciplined with our actions.

The Last Ten Nights of Ramadan Mentioned in the Quran

Ramadan is a time of mercy. During this period, it is appropriate to pray harder and more frequently. During Ramadan, Allah (SWT) opens the doors of mercy and unlimited blessings. Among its final days is the holy event of Laylatul Qadr.  In Surah Al-Qadr (97:3), Allah says: The Night of Decree brings more value than worship for 1000 months. We, being Muslim, must increase our prayers to get the blessings of Allah on these special nights. The last ten nights are the best time to seek Allah’s forgiveness. During this time, Muslims maintain long nights by praying and reading the Holy Quran.  Laylat-Ul-Qadr is also one of the nights in these last ten nights. Muslims don’t know about the exact date of Laylat-Ul-Qadr. However, they have to look for it by praying more. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.” Sahih al-Bukhari 2017
