Safar is the second month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. The month of Safar is just like the other months of the year but today many Muslims consider it an unlucky month and believe in many myths regarding the month of Safar.
If you are unaware of the myths and superstitions connected with the month of Safar, then this article will help you find out about the facts of the month of Safar and will dispel the misconceptions about the month of Safar.
WHY SAFAR MONTH IS HEAVY?
Many Muslims around the world believe in the false theory the Safar is the heavy month and brings misfortunes with it.
They believe that this month is unlucky and can cause difficulties for those who initiate any new thing in this month. But all these beliefs are just misconceptions and myths and do not have anything to do with the reality.
Arabs avoided war and battle during this time because they recognized the sacredness of the Dhu al-Hijjah, Muarram, and Dhu al-Qa’dah.
However, as soon as the month of Safar began, they would leave their homes unoccupied and try their hardest to go to war and conduct raids to collect as much war booty as they could. Because one of the literal meanings of the word “Safar” is “Empty,” it makes sense that the Safar got its name from this “emptying of the houses.”
As a result of the loss of money and social order, it caused numerous problems for both individuals and society. They consequently associated this month with the idea of difficulty and hardship, and subsequent generations who were unaware of its origins continued to hold this belief.
MYTHS ABOUT THE MONTHS OF SAFAR
Due to a lack of knowledge, certain groups of people have spread many myths about this Islamic month. Here are some of the myths people believe in that are opposite to Islamic teachings and do not have any authenticity.
TRAVELING DURING SAFAR BRINGS BAD LUCK
There is a myth that traveling during the month of Safar is unsafe and makes the journey difficult. This is only a misconception As the Quran and Hadith do not support any such thing and you can travel in any month of the calendar.
ILLNESSES ARE MORE SEVERE IN SAFAR
Another misconception about this month is that illness happens more in this month. Muslims should not believe in such myths as they must have strong faith that ALLAH is the creator and he is the one who gives sickness and he is the only one who treats it. People can fall ill any day; there is no specific month when there is more or less illness
WEDDINGS AND CELEBRATIONS SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN SAFAR
People with less knowledge still believe that a wedding or any other important day should not be celebrated this month as the month brings misfortunes with it. On the contrary to, Islam does not stop Muslims from weddings or celebrations in this or any other month of the Islamic calendar. Any celebrations which are allowed by Islam can be celebrated in the month of Safar.
The wedding of the daughter of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) – Hazrat Fatima (RA) happened in the month of Safar which is enough to burst the bubble of those who believe that weddings should not happen in the month of Safar.
CHARITY AND GOOD DEEDS ARE LESS FRUITFUL IN SAFAR
It is believed that any charity or good deed done in the month of Safar is less fruitful and brings relatively fewer rewards and blessings.
Islam encourages charity and good deeds and ALLAH (SWT) knows everything, he is the rewarding and rewards people for their charity and good deeds regardless of the day or the month when it’s done.
SAFAR IS THE “MONTH OF MISFORTUNE”
Safar is still regarded as the month of misfortune by many people even at this age. We as Muslims should not believe in any sort of myths and misconceptions about this month. There is no authenticity about the misfortunes of this month as there is no such thing stated in the Quran and the Hadiths of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
SAYING OF THE HOLY PROPHET ABOUT THE MONTH OF SAFAR
The Holy Prophet dispelled all the myths about the month of Safar.
Abu Huraira (RA) narrated: Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said,
“(There is) no ‘Adwa (no contagious disease is conveyed without Allah’s permission). nor is there any bad omen (from birds), nor is there any Hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar . . .” (Bukhari, hadith 5707).
FINAL WORDS
The month of Safar is just like the other month and does not hold any misfortunes. It is the habit of illiterate people to believe in their myths and spread them among the people. Such myths and misconceptions only cause chaos and despair among the people.
We Muslims have the Quran and Hadith for our guidance and neither of these sources of guidance state anything related to the misfortune of Safar.
Everything happens with the will of ALLAH and no month or day is responsible for any misfortune. These are all just misconceptions that Muslims should not believe at all. May ALLAH guide everyone to the straight path
